Hi Jacquelyn, "Funny Cars" in Pensacola Beach (850-932-4949)rents them.
Really surprised how far behind florida is providing basic disabled beach access. Vanderbilt beach without wooden planks or sand wheelchair. Standard way behind European locations such as canary and costa del sol.
Where to stay in Destin and get myself under an umbrella with a cold drink. Accessible beach.
Hi Bruce,
Sounds fun!
Here's a link to hotels in Destin. Look for the 'ADA' symbol to find suitable rooms: http://www.emeraldcoastfl.com/accommodations/destin-hotels-motels/.
For a specific suggestion, Destin on the Beach (1020 HWY 98 EAST P.O. BOX 577 DESTIN, FLORIDA 32541, 850-837-6181) is beachfront and has 10 accessible rooms.
I'm happy to call the visitor's services on Monday - or you can, at 850-651-7131, to see what they recommend.

I find this website to be most unhelpful. I am trying to find a list of beaches near Venice FLA that are handicap assessable and get nowhere??
Hi Celia,
Sorry for the trouble you're having! It's so frustrating when you can't get the info you want. Here's a link to the Venice Chamber's Brohard Park, which has handicap accessible boardwalks, etc: http://www.venicegov.com/Park_links/brohard.htm The website has a big list of beaches you can click on to find which will suit you (and have the facilities you need). If you don't want to go through the whole list I'd recommend you call them (the number is on the website). I was going to call them for you but it's too late and they were closed.
I hope you come and enjoy Florida.

Hi Shawna,
There are SO many beaches in Florida-- you just need to pick the ones that sound most like 'you.' Read my advice to help you figure out which to choose here: http://www.visitflorida.com/qa/action.view/12031-how-to-choose-the-best-beach-for-me. Then just contact their visitor's services and ask about where you can get a free chair. I don't see why you couldn't wheel one of the chairs into shallow water, provided the slope was gradual. Have fun!

Many of the beaches in Florida are not truly accessible to the wheelchair user. If you use a power chair because your shoulders are worn out, or are a quad., beach wheel chairs do not work well for you. They are manual and you need one or two or three people to assist you. Most pools at beach accommodations are not accessible. Florida is way behind the times. Miami's south beach is the best place for wheelchair users, the beach is arranged with a mesh or carpet like area where you can actually go and sit with the sun bathers. It is great. Congrats to South Beach. Boo rest of Florida.
We Live in Bunnell Florida and would like to know if there are any beaches in the area that my husband could use his power chair to get close to the beach
